Today was my Grandma Erna's funeral. I was unable to attend since I was just there a few weeks ago. She passed away last Saturday night. I am glad she is at peace now. I will miss her very much. She is the only Grandparent I have ever had. I have so many great memories of her. We used to go to her house for vacations and do.. well.. whatever we wanted! The trip always started with a trip to the grocery store where we bought many things, but I always remember the little cereal boxes. We would than go to the video store and rent way to many movies. Great classics like "Attack of the killer tomatoes". She would often take us to the zoo. I think she started me on my love of Target. She would take us there and let us shop. She bought us most of our winter coats growing up. When I was 10 she moved to Austin, just a block away. It was so nice having her close. Cookies all the time! You could never go hungry near Grandma. Meatloaf, pea-cheese salad, goulash.. Christmas was always the best. She would make me peanut butter cookies with the chocolate kiss in the middle. She would make popcorn trees, Danish treats I can not spell, and yes more goulash. She also loved to knit and crochet. She made most of our scarves and mittens growing up. Blankets, potholders, stuffed animals, table cloths and Christmas ornaments. (I will be getting one of the ornaments to hang proudly on the tree this year!) Grandma loved crossword puzzles too. I have never been able to do these.. but I have tried many times because of her.
To honor her today I made her favorite cookies, Brown Sugar.
Brown Sugar cookies by Erna Walker
1 cup butter, or oleo
1 egg
1 tsp vanilla
1 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup white sugar
2 1/2 cups flour
1/2 tsp salt
2 tsp baking soda
2 tsp cream of tarter
Melt butter to oily stage. Mix butter, egg, vanilla and sugars. Mix the rest in a bowl and than combine the two. Bake 9-11 minutes at 350.
I have so many great memories of Grandma. I hope to post some pictures of her soon. I really hope where ever life takes you when you pass, she is the happiest she has ever been. She will live on in all who met her. A part of her will always be in my heart, a part on my thighs.
I love you Gram!

Heidi, that's a very nice memorial to your Grandma.
I hope that you're right and that she is very happy where she is now.
That was very touching Heidi!
Great writing from your heart, Heidi. I'm sorry you couldn't be at the memorial service yesterday -- you were missed -- but am so happy you, and Hans, were able to come home a couple of weeks ago. It meant a lot to her and your dad. Plus, I got to see you! :-)
I thought of you a lot yesterday. As a Grandma, I know how much Erna loved having you kids come and be around her.
The memorial service was very nice. She was remembered in so many ways.
A few people thought that Relia looked like you.
Just a couple of questions about the cookies.
Do you drop by tsp. on a greased cookie sheet or roll and dip in sugar on ungreased cookie sheet.
Also, GOOD LUCK, Brian on the surgery.
